Deep in Mattawoman Creek is a small sand dune often visited by some boaters. Boats can get within a few feet of shore and still be safe from grounding.
The Dunes is one of the most protected areas on the river. Storms and wakes will not be of any concern while hanging out here. The status of the dunes is continually in question as the sand erodes away and vegetation continues to grow.
If a trip is planned to the dunes and you have yet to visit there, you may want to follow someone as the path is a bit tricky - although the channel is marked on some GPS systems.
